Problems of digital art
Digital art is a remarkable universe filled with magnificent artworks created by incredibly talented artists. However, this ecosystem faces major issues that impair these artists' hard work and the value of the art they create. Content theft and copyright infringement are the main culprits. Although the internet has its advantages and disadvantages, it has allowed digital art to exist and artists to express themselves, but users are free to steal this content or counterfeit it. The monetary and artistic value of these works is then nullified, making their sale and therefore the compensation for their work impossible.
These issues of authenticity and protection of works and artists are not the only problems affecting this ecosystem. Digital art also has extremely limited utility, being confined to the digital world. To date, the ability to display digital artworks at home exists but is prohibitively expensive. Moreover, it is currently impossible to exhibit a digital artwork at home that can be certified as authentic and valuable at a glance.
Many have tried to address these issues through blockchain and NFTs. However, this is far from sufficient. Due to the lack of elegant solutions for displaying them without compromising the fundamental principles of authenticity and ownership, the utility of NFTs has been limited. Consequently, they have been regarded more as financial assets than as cherished creations that can be proudly displayed. NFTs, therefore, do not allow for the display of an artwork considered authentic, whether by provenance or the certification implemented in the NFT. Which means that the Blockchain does certify the authenticity of the NFT but not the artist's work contained within the NFT.
Currently, the digital art ecosystem and digital artworks are not on an equal footing with traditional art. While a traditional composition has monetary and artistic value and can be bought and sold between individuals or displayed at home, digital artworks cannot. Ultimately, both digital and traditional masterpieces face the same issue: counterfeiting. That is where Opus come with solutions.
